Kaizer Chiefs have tied down rising star Teboho Mlangeni to a new professional contract. The 18-year-old midfielder from Zondi, Soweto, has signed his first senior deal with the club, a move announced by his representatives, P Management, on Tuesday.
The long-term agreement secures the future of a player who arrived at Naturena from the Augusto Palacios Academy in 2024. It is designed to protect the club's youth investment and ward off potential external interest.
Youth success on the international stage
Mlangeni's rise has been marked by success with South Africa's junior sides. He was a key figure for the Amajita U20 team that won the COSAFA Cup in Mozambique last month, a victory that also secured qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The midfielder also starred for the U17 Amajimbos and was part of the squad for the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Development pipeline thriving at Naturena
His promotion comes as the club's development structures show strong form. The reserve side are unbeaten in the DStv Diski Challenge, with recent wins over rivals Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates and a 4-0 victory against Marumo Gallants. Mlangeni, who has featured in the Gauteng Development League, is viewed as the next prospect ready to push for Betway Premiership football, alongside other emerging talents like Kabelo Nkgwesa.
The move signals a renewed emphasis on the youth pipeline as the senior team handles the league season. Kaizer Chiefs currently sit 5th in the Betway Premiership standings with 14 points from eight games, nine points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns. Their record of three wins and five draws from eight games has yielded 13 goals scored and eight conceded. Their recent form shows one defeat and three draws from the last four matches, a sequence that began with a 1-1 draw against Polokwane City on 12 September, followed by a goalless draw at Golden Arrows on 20 September. The senior side's next challenge is a trip to face Orlando Pirates on Saturday 31 October, a tough test against the side sitting 2nd in the table. The team will be looking to players like their current top scorer, M. Shabalala, who has two goals this season, for inspiration as they aim to improve on their current average of 1.75 points per game. Mlangeni is expected to continue his progression through the ranks and push for a senior team spot as the Phefeni Glamour Boys aim to break into the top four.
