Kaizer Chiefs have received an opportunity to acquire Bafana Bafana winger Elias Mokwana without a transfer fee. This follows the breakdown of his anticipated switch to the Moroccan club Wydad Athletic Club.

Reports from journalist Mazola Molefe indicate the offer was made to the Naturena based team, but terms are yet to be settled. Mokwana is currently unattached after returning to South Africa, having previously played for Esperance in Tunisia and spent time on loan in Saudi Arabia. He initially rose to prominence in the domestic league while at Sekhukhune United prior to his overseas transfer.

Coach seeks attacking depth

The head coach, Fernando Da Cruz, is reportedly aiming to strengthen his attacking options. Existing wing players at the club are Faiz Abrahams, Wandile Duba, Pule Mmodi, Asanele Velebayi and Langelihle Phili. As a player who naturally operates on the right flank, Mokwana would offer immediate rivalry for a place. The team's current top scorer this season is M. Shabalala with 2 goals in 5 appearances.

Ex PSL midfielder Mark Haskins has voiced support for the possible acquisition, stating he thinks Mokwana has the ability to succeed at Kaizer Chiefs.

This possibility emerges while the team is in a positive run of form, currently positioned fifth in the Premier Soccer League on 14 points after 8 games, with a record of three wins and five draws. Their recent form shows two wins, two draws and one defeat from their last five matches, and they are on a two-game winning run. This includes a 3-0 victory over TS Galaxy on Tuesday 27 October, where Wandile Duba scored a hat-trick, and a 1-0 win over Red Arrows on Friday 23 October. They have scored 13 goals and conceded 8 this season, giving them a goal difference of plus five. Despite this solid start, they remain 9 points behind the league leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns.

Their upcoming match is a significant away encounter against rivals Orlando Pirates, who sit second in the table, on Saturday 31 October.

The club is now waiting for the player's response regarding the offer, with a major local derby approaching.
