Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Xolani Mabaso has admitted his poor attitude and disengagement wasted his career at the club. The player nicknamed 'Touch' came through the Naturena academy but failed to capitalise on his first-team chances.
Mabaso stated his negative mindset took hold when his playing time did not increase as he expected. "I would like to believe so, that there was that element of lacking here and there at times," he said. Instead of using limited opportunities as motivation, he became disinterested. "When that didn't happen, I started asking myself why I wasn't playing instead of working harder," Mabaso added.
He described feeling unhappy towards the end of his tenure, a state he says made it hard to achieve anything. The pressure of wearing the famous black and gold shirt also weighed heavily on him during a spell when Chiefs, known as the Glamour Boys, were among South Africa's strongest sides.
His candid reflection comes as the current Kaizer Chiefs side sits fourth in the Premier Soccer League with 13 points from seven games. They are unbeaten in their last five matches, a run detailed on our standings page, and are seven points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
The team's recent form, which reads DDWDD, shows resilience but also a need to convert draws into wins. You can review the full fixtures list ahead of their next challenge. Kaizer Chiefs host Stellenbosch at home on 17 October as they aim to maintain their unbeaten run and close the gap at the top.
