Kaizer Chiefs are moving to secure midfielder Sibongiseni Mthethwa's future with a new contract offer. The club has tabled a one-year deal with an option for a further year, which would keep the player at Naturena until June 2028.
The proposed extension is a reward for the 32-year-old's consistent performances since joining from Stellenbosch FC in September 2023. Nicknamed 'the Bull', Mthethwa has made over 50 appearances for Amakhosi and was part of the squad that lifted the Nedbank Cup in 2025. He has become a key defensive shield in midfield, valued for his combative edge and tactical discipline.
Mthethwa's Chiefs journey
His fortunes at the club changed significantly under the interim coaching duo of Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze, who handed him regular game time. Before that, he had struggled for opportunities during his first season. The club now views him as integral to maintaining midfield balance as they push in the Betway Premiership, where they currently sit 5th with 14 points from nine games, having recorded three wins and five draws against one loss. Mmodi was their lone scorer.
The contract move comes as Chiefs look to stabilise after a mixed run of form. Their last outing was a 2-1 defeat to Orlando Pirates on 31 October, a result that leaves them 12 points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns. The team has scored 14 goals and conceded 10 so far this season, with M. Shabalala their current top scorer with two goals. Securing an experienced campaigner like Mthethwa is seen as key for shoring up the side as they prepare for their next fixture away to seventh-placed Chippa United on Saturday 28 November.
Securing Mthethwa's services is seen as a priority for the club's medium-term planning. The experienced midfielder's current deal was originally set to expire in 2026. By triggering the option, Chiefs would guarantee his presence for their decisive domestic championship battles over the next two seasons.
