Kaizer Chiefs FC have added just three players in this transfer window, and club legend Itumeleng Khune says the club still needs to go back to the market.
What did Khune say?
Khune, speaking during a FIFA World Cup viewing event over the weekend, argued that Chiefs must sign more players before the window slams shut. The club will compete in the CAF Confederation Cup this season, and Khune believes the current squad lacks the depth required for both domestic and continental battles. “They need to beef up the squad,” Khune said. “They’ll be competing in the CAF Confederation Cup, so they can’t go in with what they have now.”
Who has Chiefs signed so far?
Amakhosi returned from pre-season in Spain with two free-agent arrivals: central defender Thabo Moloisane, who left Stellenbosch FC, and goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner, who joined from Sekhukhune United. On Tuesday the club confirmed a third addition, Tanzanian defensive midfielder Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko, who arrives from Azam FC. Bitegeko’s move was announced just days before Chiefs face Scottland FC in the Toyota Cup at Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace in Rustenburg on Sunday.
Why is the transfer window tough for Chiefs?
Khune pointed to inflated transfer prices as the main hurdle. “Any player Chiefs want, the price will be doubled or tripled,” he said. He also called for financial fair play in South African football to level the playing field. “Some teams can sign players, others can’t,” Khune added. “We need to revisit that clause and activate it for fairness in all 16 PSL teams.” The club’s limited spending power has forced them to rely on free transfers and loans rather than marquee deals.
