The former coach also revealed that he advised the Chiefs hierarchy to focus on recruiting top players, citing the lack of Chiefs players in the Bafana Bafana setup as a clear indicator of why the club has failed to end its long-standing trophy drought. Ben Youssef warned that cup wins are not a foundation for league dominance and that the club faces a choice between spending big on elite talent or enduring several more years of rebuilding. He believes that winning the Nedbank Cup or the Carling Knockout Cup is not something the team can build on, citing Magesi FC's win in the Carling Cup and subsequent relegation as an example. For Chiefs to compete for the PSL title, Ben Youssef says they need to bring in six top players, or else they will have to continue rebuilding and wait for several years before they can think about winning something.
